Introduction

The dark side of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon... it seems like an odd topic, doesn't it? There are, after all, so many other anime series out there that are much darker than Sailor Moon. Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shoujo Kakumei Utena for example. Both shows twist and turn, their plot lines often confusing and obscure to their viewers. Ah, how I love shows like that.

That's part of why I created this section: the darkness of Evangelion and Utena is apparent to anyone. It is a part of the series as much as the characters are. Sailor Moon has a dark side to it as well, but it has not been (to my knowledge) addressed by anyone as of yet.

Sailor Moon was my introduction to anime. Even with the edited English dub, I was still very concious of the aspects that would have never appeared in a North American cartoon show. I did research, and found out that a lot had been edited out to make it "safer" for the little kiddies.

It's this weird obsession I have. I always look for the dark aspect of my interests. I should note that by "dark", I do not mean "wrong", "bad" or "immoral". The darkness I see is the aspects of life that mainstream North American culture tries to ignore or cover up. I certainly don't think that death is something to be feared; it's simply part of the cycle of life. Human sexuality is a very natural thing (yes, that includes homosexuality) in my eyes.

However, our culture often deems these items as bad, and tries to ignore them if not outright prohibit them. So, being the perverse creature that I am, I'm going to bring these aspects up where people can see them. I'm going to try to show them that the darkness is merely a balance to the light, and that there's nothing evil here (well, except for some of the villains, ne? ^_-).

I ask that you come into this with an open heart and mind, and I hope that you aren't afraid of the dark.
